Dr. Sarmad Jamal Siddiqui, a prominent expert in the field of climate change and public health, delivered a compelling presentation during the district-level policy dialogue. His focus was on highlighting the issues and challenges of climate change and its profound impact on human health. With a wealth of knowledge and research, Dr Sarmad brought attention to the various ways in which climate change directly affects human well-being, including the rise in heat-related illnesses, increased prevalence of vector-borne diseases, and adverse effects on mental health. During the first district-level policy dialogue on May 19, 2023, Ms. Zaib Un Nisa, an expert in climate change, took the stage to present a comprehensive review of policies on climate change at the national, provincial, and local levels. With her expertise, she provided valuable insights into existing laws and regulations related to climate action. Her presentation shed light on the current policy landscape, highlighting areas of strength and identifying potential gaps that need to be addressed. Her thorough analysis played a crucial role in guiding the discussions and shaping the outcomes of the dialogue, as participants explored ways to effectively tackle climate change challenges in line with Sustainable Development Goal 13.

The opening remarks were delivered by Professor Sikandar Ali from the IR Department and Professor Noor from the Business Administration Department, emphasizing the significance of these policy dialogues in promoting sustainable development and effective policymaking.

Sukkur IBA University, May 20, 2023 – Academics, civil society organizations (CSOs), and elected representatives came together yesterday at Sukkur IBA University for a thought-provoking district-level policy dialogue on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities. The event aimed to raise awareness about the challenges of resource mobilization for local governments and identify key barriers to achieving SDG 11 at the district level.

With Naushahro Feroze serving as the focal point, participants discussed and analyzed district-level issues, policy gaps, and the need for inter-sectoral collaboration to promote sustainable development. The dialogue sought to bridge the gap between government departments, CSOs, and communities to foster cooperation in attaining SDG 11 objectives.

The event commenced with warm welcome remarks by the chief guest, emphasizing the importance of sustainable cities and communities in the overall development of the region. Mr Sajjad Imran, a renowned consultant, set the tone for the dialogue by sharing the meeting’s objectives and providing an orientation on SDG 11. He highlighted the significance of local-level sustainable development in achieving long-term goals.

The spotlight then shifted to Bisharat Hussain Vistro, UC Chairman, who shed light on the pivotal role of local governments in developing safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. Vistro emphasized the need for effective governance structures and community involvement in shaping the future of their cities.

Zaib Un Nisa, AB & CB Manager, took the stage next to present a comprehensive review of policies on Sustainable Cities & Communities at the national, provincial, and local levels. Her insights into existing laws provided valuable context for understanding the policy landscape and identifying gaps that hinder progress towards SDG 11.

The event concluded with an engaging group discussion, where participants actively shared their perspectives on policy gaps in SDG 11 at the district and provincial levels. The dialogue enabled fruitful exchanges of ideas and recommendations to facilitate local-level resource mobilization, while also fostering a greater sense of collective responsibility.
