Political Consensus on the betterment of Citizens through Local Government

20 October 2021 (Islamabad) Senior leadership of Pakistan Muslim League (N) had a fruitful discussion with the leadership of the Association for Development of Local Governance on achieving sustainable local governments in Pakistan. The meeting was graced by Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Secretary General PML (N) Mr Ahsan Iqbal, Vice President PML (N), Mr Rana Tanveer Hussain, Senator Mr Mushahid Hussain and MNA – PML (N), Mr Syed Sajid Mehdi. The meeting was arranged to formulate a better strategy for sustainable local governments in Pakistan.

President, ADLG (District Chairman Lodhran) Mr Rajan Sutan Pirzada, Mr Javaid Hasan (Program Manager, SALG), Mr Anwar Hussain, (CEO ADLG), Mr Tariq Awan (Chairman District Chakwal), Mr Raja Qasim (District Chairman Jehlam) and ADLG Coordinator, Ms Zaib un Nisa joined this meeting representing the Local Councils Associations from Pakistan under the banner of ADLG.

Local Councils Associations from Pakistan have always been advocates of practical solutions for introducing sustainable local governments in the country. During the Expert Roundtable Meeting, all the Political Parties gathered at one table and decided that one dedicated chapter regarding local governments in the Constitution of Pakistan is the only way to achieve powerful, sustainable and effective local governments in Pakistan.

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan showed solidarity with ADLG and tendered a suggestion for drafting a proposed LG bill to present in the National and Provincial Assemblies of Pakistan for inclusion of a dedicated chapter on local governments in the Constitution of Pakistan.

If Government is showing interest in amending the local government laws for the betterment of citizens, we are with the government at every level, said Secretary-General of PML (N) Mr Ahsan Iqbal.

Lower-tier can only be developed through community leaders, MNAs and MPAs can never successfully work at the lower level, so it is important for Political Parties to come at a middle ground for continuous local governments and timely elections, said Khaqaan Abbasi.

LCAs have been actively involved in a legal fight, advocacy and lobbying to revive LGs in Punjab. The organisation also collaborated with all the top stakeholders for conducting awareness sessions across Punjab to train councillors about election methods and their responsibilities as per available law, said President ADLG, Mr Rajan.

Mr Anwar said we’re working as a bridge between Government and opposition parties so everyone can work for the collective good of citizens.
