Greeting From Local Councils Association of the Punjab (LCAP)

Greeting from Local Councils Association of the Punjab. Local Councils Association of Punjab welcome you in the “International Conference on SDG’s and Executive Bureau Meeting” being held in Islamabad from April 10-12, 2018. It is important that local government should play role as a partner in the implementation of the SDGs. The drafted goals already recognize the specific priorities of cities and human settlements, and global local government have come together to emphasize the importance of localization of all the goals to ensure that local people everywhere have access to the basic services, economic, social and political opportunities which are encapsulated in the SDGs. It is important for local government’s role in setting, implementing and monitoring to be recognized and endorsed. The Conference will seek to challenge the status and encourage local government to think strategically in terms of the kind of local government that must be in place to enable local government to be effective partners in the implementation of the SDGs. We hope you will find this background paper informative as well as challenging. We look forward to your input into the debates and discussions at the Conference, and encourage you to reflect on the questions highlighted throughout, both from the experiences in your own country and the sector as a whole. There will be an opportunity through plenary sessions and working groups to discuss issues in more depth. We hope this conference will support our members and partners in meeting the challenges of localizing the SDGs.

Syed Muhammad Asghar Shah Gillani,
Local Councils Association of the Punjab
